Freshmen Spark Women’s Water Polo Success at Jaguar Mini-Tournament

The women’s water polo team is off to a promising start under second-year head coach Larry Sanders. The Olympians are 2-4 overall, with their two most recent victories coming at the Jaguar Mini-Tournament at Southwestern College, where they defeated El Camino College 10-8 and Cypress College 12-7.

Freshman Kylie Sagastume has been the team’s offensive leader. The Clairemont High School graduate stands out for her nonstop movement, swim speed, and scoring ability. “Kylie has excellent speed, which allows her to fast break opponents and force them to adjust defensively,” Sanders said. “She also has a strong arm and shoots extremely well.”

Several other freshmen are making key contributions. Sahara Simpson brings speed and tenacity, Riley Reid has shown poise and versatility, and goalie Isabella Hartley of Mar Vista High School has anchored the defense with strong shot-blocking and leadership.

Sanders credits the team’s progress to stronger ball control, better situational awareness, and a willingness to learn. One of the biggest challenges, however, has been the lack of substitutions caused by a small roster. To address this, the coaching staff has focused on the players’ fitness levels so the team can stay competitive.

The Olympians will host Miramar College on Wednesday, October 8, at 4 p.m.
