Women’s Volleyball Starts Season 2-0, Set for Home Opener vs. Mt. San Jacinto

The San Diego Mesa College women’s volleyball team will open its home schedule today at 5 p.m. against Mt. San Jacinto College, looking to build on a strong undefeated start to the season.

Mesa is coming off a stellar 2024 campaign, finishing third in the state and capturing the conference title. That momentum carried into last weekend’s Bakersfield Quad, where the Olympians defeated both Bakersfield College 3-1 (25-9, 19-25, 25-13, 25-10) and Mt. San Antonio College 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-14).

In the opener against Bakersfield, outside hitter Mia Lundberg set the tone with 11 kills, 13 digs, and three service aces for 16 points. Middle blocker Isabella Barrios was efficient at the net, recording seven kills on 13 swings (10.5 points). Setter Ruby Ennis also made her presence felt, contributing four kills, five digs, and a match-high six aces for 12 points.

Mesa carried its strong play into the second match against Mt. San Antonio College. Lundberg once again led the charge with 15 kills, five aces, and eight digs, finishing with 21 total points. Barrios matched her output at the net with 15 kills and added three blocks to reach 18.5 points. Outside hitter Jovi Harmon anchored the back row, collecting 15 digs while adding eight kills and an ace for 11 points.

“After a state title in 2023 and a third-place finish last season, it’s important to keep building momentum as a program,” said head coach Bobbie Jo Stall-Vest. “We started the season with two solid wins, and the team showed their potential on both offense and defense. Like any early part of the season, consistency isn’t always there, but we learned a lot about areas we need to improve.”

Tonight’s opponent, Mt. San Jacinto, enters the matchup looking to rebound after dropping its season opener to Ventura College (1–3). The Eagles are no strangers to success, having claimed the Inland Empire Athletic Conference championship last season.

“We feel good about where the team is right now and are very optimistic about the season,” Stall-Vest added. “We have a lot of new faces, but the squad is excited to compete and ready to make another run at a title.”
