With a 9–11 record, the women’s basketball team continues to show improvement and, with a few adjustments, looks make a strong run in the upcoming games.
“Overall, the team looks good,” said head coach Careth Herron. “We’ve lost some close games, but the players continue to show fight and improvement.” In January alone, the Olympians suffered close losses to Fullerton College (65–63) and San Diego City College (71–67), showing how competitive the team has been.
The staff believes the team is beginning to come together, building chemistry and finding energy in one another’s success. The Olympians continue to play tough, disciplined defense and are showing progress in ball movement on the offensive end. However, to make a strong push, the team must improve its consistency in running the offense and become more physical on the boards.
Shooting consistency remains a primary focus in practice. Herron mentioned that the team has emphasized more game-paced shooting drills, along with additional conditioning designed to help players convert shots while fatigued.
Sophomore Stevie Lundquist has continued to shine, leading the team in scoring at 19.9 points per game. Her offensive production consistently makes her the most challenging defensive assignment for opposing teams.
Freshman Valerie Marquez, a Helix Charter High School product, has been strong in the paint. She leads the team in rebounding with 9.4 rebounds per game and brings effort and physicality every time she’s on the court.
Sophomore guard Rylie Willis has also stepped into a leadership role. Alongside Marquez, Willis has been a key contributor on the boards since conference play began, averaging 7.3 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.
The Olympians return to action Wednesday, January 21, when they face Southwestern College in another conference matchup. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
