Olympians Builds Momentum Entering L.A. Valley Tournament

The SD Mesa College Women's Basketball team is off to a solid start under first-year head coach Careth Herron. The Olympians currently hold a 5–4 overall record and are riding a three-game winning streak after defeating Santa Ana College 70–62, Bakersfield College 66–55, and Riverside City College 64–51.

One of the key reasons for the team's recent success has been improved communication on both ends of the floor. Herron adds that having a more balanced offense has contributed and will remain a focus over the next few games.

She highlights the strong play of Stevie Lundquist, Rylie Willis, and Clare Patrick. Lundquist leads the team in scoring, and her energy plays a major role in the team's aggressiveness and pace. Willis has been a consistent presence early in the season, continually finding ways to impact both offense and defense. Patrick brings tremendous energy, and her heart and selflessness have established her as one of the team's leaders. She currently leads the team in assists and is one of its most reliable three-point shooters.

The Olympians have also benefited from the immediate impact of three new players. Freshman Valerie Marquez (Helix Charter High School) leads the team in rebounds and is beginning to settle into the collegiate level of play. Maleah Porch (Otay Ranch High School) contributes significantly by controlling the tempo on offense and providing speed and defensive toughness. Meanwhile, MJ Johnson (Christian Unified High School), the team's second-leading scorer, provides an offensive spark every time she steps onto the court.

With the season still in its early stages, natural adjustments are taking place. "We have been focusing a lot on the details and being more consistent and efficient," she explains. She notes that the defense has shown clear improvement in recent weeks, adding, "I'm pleased with how our defense has become a bigger factor in our play. We face some high-level teams, and I'm excited for the group to continue moving in a positive direction."

The team continues to grow, and the coaching staff is encouraged by the steady progress. While there is still work ahead, the program is clearly headed in the right direction.
