The San Diego Mesa College women's basketball team is entering the 2024 season with high expectations after a successful 2023 campaign that included 20 wins and a regional semifinal playoff appearance.
The Olympians, who finished second in their conference with a 20-10 overall record (9-3 in conference play), return to the court with a strong blend of veteran leadership and promising newcomers.
There’s been a lot of excitement around the team since the start of the semester. Players are eager to bring their offseason training and practice into live competition.
Head Coach Lindsay Samaniego has been focused on building team chemistry and adapting new concepts and strategies. “We've grown a lot these past few months and have improved individually and as a team. We're learning a lot about our system and our style,” says Samaniego. “You can expect us to work hard and compete every time we step on the court.”
The Olympians boast a strong core of returning players, including four all-conference selections:
First Team: Kendal Alloway (12.6 PPG, 9 RPG, 1.2 APG, 53.5% FG), Alivia Gillespie (11.8 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 2 APG), and Alethze Marquez (9.9 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 53.3% FG) •
Second Team: Rayleen Moreno (8 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 2.6 APG)
Several talented freshmen are expected to make an immediate impact, including sophomore Christina Bowen, a transfer from San Diego City College, will add depth and versatility to the roster:
• Rylie Willis, a 5'9" guard from Needles, California
• Stevie Lundquist, a 5'9" guard from Mendocino High School
• Jordan Naanos from Montgomery High School
• Addison Horn from Placer High School in Auburn, California
• Sophia Walton, a post player from Goodyear, Arizona
“This group has gotten very close, and you can see it in the way they support each other on and off the court,” Samaniego adds. “It's going to be an exciting year, especially with our results from last season. We hope everyone will come check out a game!”
