After a 3-1 victory over Long Beach City College in the SoCal Regional Quarterfinals, the San Diego Mesa College men’s volleyball team are set to take on Orange Coast College (OCC) in the semifinals on Thursday, April 24. This game is a rematch of last season's state championship, with the Pirates coming out victorious with a 3-0 straight set win.
OCC finished the season with 21-3 overall record and recently defeated Irvine Valley College 3-2 in their quarterfinal match on Friday.
Considered one of the premier volleyball programs in the state, it is no surprise that OCC is once again in the semifinals. Mesa College head coach David Proffitt says one of the reasons why they are always good is because they are well-coached, have depth, and all their players are skilled.
Proffitt reminds the team to stick to their brand of volleyball. "There is no need to change anything this time of year," he states. "The guys are incredibly dialed in right now, so I feel confident that we are going to show up for a fight.” In addition, Proffitt emphasizes that one of the keys for a victory will be to stay competitive throughout the match.
