In the final home game for 9 sophomores, Mesa turned back Southwestern 10-9 in over-time and stays unbeaten in conference play at 7-0. The list of two year Mesa players include: Emily Torres, Carrie Christianson, Cassie Miranda, Natalie Thompson, Catalina Barraza, Melanie McElroy, Stephanie Krych, Jezica Salmaron and Crystal Patterson who suffered a season ending injury last week. Transfer Jacki Snyder also played her last home conference game.
Mesa got off to a slow start and ended the first quarter down 0-3. Mesa finally got on the board when Catalina Barraza converted a penalty shot but at half remained 3 back at 1-4. By the end of the third period Mesa had drawn within one, 4-5, as Natalie Thompson, Zinnea Alexander and Barraza each scored one. Regulation ended tied at 8-8 as Catalina scored 2 and Zinnea, and Natalie added one each. Natalie scored a goal in both over-time periods to lead Mesa to the win, 10-9.
Mesa wraps up the conference round robin tomorrow against Grossmont, at the Joan Kroc Aquatic Center.
