Men's XC Welcomes New Head Coach

2015 will be Head Coach Jose Barbosa's first season at the helm for the Men's Cross Country.  Coach Barbosa has spent the last three seasons assisting the Mesa Women's team under Renee Ross.  Jose comes to Mesa with a wealth of experience and leadership as a coach nationally and internationally. As a 4 time Olympic athlete in 1996 in Atlanta, USA, 1992 Barcelona, Spain, 1988 Seoul, Korea, and 1984 Los Angeles, USA. In 1991 Coach Barbosa was the #1 ranked 800 meter runner in the world and in the same year he also won the silver medal in the the World Track and FIeld Championships in Toyko, Japan. In 1995, he won the gold medal at the Pan Am Games for the 800m race. Previous to those years, he won the bronze medal in the World Track and Field Championships in Rome.  Coach Barbosa was a 4-year student-athlete at the University of Oregon where he earned his Bachelors degree.

As a coach, Jose Barbosa places his programs emphasis on academic excellence with a healthy balance of athletic excellence.  As a former DI student-athlete who maintained a 3.6 gpa, Barbosa knows what it will take for his student-athletes to be successful in the classroom.  Away from Mesa College Coach Barbosa is a Performance Coach with AES Sports Agency where he is assigned to world class athletes to help improve endurance, speed, strength and mental focus.  He is well prepared and highly motivated to shape his team into the most successful student-athletes that they can possibly be.
