Sept. 4, 2014 - The Olympians started off their 2014 season with a strong win over the visiting Palomar College. Palomar stayed close to Mesa for a majority of the game but it was Mesa's tenacity that ended up giving the Olympians their first win on the season.
The first three quarters were an even match between the two colleges in a goal-for-goal competion. The first quarter ended in 2-2 while the second quarter ended with a 4-4 tie. The third quarter saw three goals for each team yielding a seven-all score as they headed into the fourth, and last, quarter of the game. Seizing the opportunity to take a commanding lead, the Olympians finally broke away from the Comets and ran off five goals in eight minutes of play to secure a 12-9 victory in their home and season opener.
Leading the way for the Mesa win was top scorers, Jesse Reiling and Bryan Barewho each posted three goals a piece. But it was Mesa's team work that pushed the win as contributions came from sophomore team captain, Armani Antonelli. Head Coach Nathan Resch commented on his captain's performance, "[Armani Antonellis] played outstanding defense which allowed us the flexibility to do more in other parts of the pool." With 6 steals, freshman Cheyne Merrillmade his presence known in the pool while teammate and fellow freshman Brandon Jack held the Comets to only nine goals and came up with seven blocks.
Mesa will head off to a tournament Sept. 5-6 at West Valley College in Saratoga, CA where they will face off against mostly Northern California water polo teams.
