Mesa Men's Tennis Tabs Buckner as New Assistant Coach

8/11/15   SAN DIEGO    San Diego Mesa College Head Men's Tennis Coach Michael Hootner has named Andrew Buckner as his new Assistant Men's Tennis Coach. Buckner will replace Jason Sinkoff who was recently named the Head Men's Tennis Coach at Division I Wagner College (NY).

     "We are thrilled to have Andrew as a part of our tennis family," said Olympian Head Coach, Michael Hootner. "He has a tremendous passion for the game and is a great communicator," concluded Coach Hootner.

     Andrew, from San Diego, attended Mt. Carmel High School before attending Palomar College in 2009-10. Andrew played singles and doubles for the Comets during both of his seasons. In 2010, Buckner was ranked in the top 10 in singles and the top 5 in doubles in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference while making it to the round of 32 in the state regional tournament.

     Following his time at Palomar, he began teaching as a tennis coach at the Surf & Turf Tennis Club in Del Mar (CA). He also has taught at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club where he helped develop players individually while helping to enhance the junior academy. He lead the Junior Team to their first Sectional Championship victory. Andrew also worked at 4S Ranch in 2008 as an Assistant Tennis Pro.

     Buckner has earned three AA Degrees from Palomar college and is now studying Astronomy with a minor in Mathematics from San Diego State University.

     Andrew has volunteered his time with the Rancho Family YMCA as a sports instructor as well as a youth leader in the high school ministry at the Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church.

     Buckner hobbies include engineering, astronomical observing, sports and studying the Bible.

     Buckner lives in San Diego.
