Travis Nichols was born in Los Angeles but raised in San Diego and has had a passion for making a difference in the lives of the young men in his community for as long as he can remember. After obtaining his undergraduate degree, Nichols began his professional career working with youth who were wards of the court, followed by several years of providing professional support to children with incarcerated parents, as well as recruiting mentors for these young people within the San Diego community.
Nichols continued in his quest to provide a solid foundation for young men when he broke into coaching at San Diego Mesa College in 2007. Former Head Coach Ed Helscher asked him to assist in coaching the Olympian basketball team. Nichols did not hesitate to help his alma mater.
Nichols attended San Diego Mesa College circa 1994 – 1996. In his 2 years as an Olympian, Nichols set new school records for the most 3 point baskets made in a single game; He sank 6 his freshman year and 9 in his sophomore year making “All-Conference” and “Team Most Valuable Player”. Coach Nichols was named twice to the Pacific Coast All Conference Team and is one of 21 players on the 30 plus scoring club.
After San Diego Mesa College, Nichols moved forward to play Division II at what was then known as the College of Notre Dame in Belmont Ca. He was his team MVP and again he achieved the title of All Conference player in the NCAC shooting 48% from the 3point line, graduating with a bachelor's degree in Communications. Coach Nichols went on to continue his education at the United States Sports Academy. There, he studied Sports Science, Coaching and Management, receiving his M.S. Since receiving his specialized degree Nichols has been an adjunct professor at Mesa College, teaching courses such as Basketball, Spin, Health 101, Badminton, and Weight Training.
In addition to his passion surrounding coaching, Nichols is also committed to helping those he works with achieve personal fitness and nutrition goals. Being one of the Founders of Off the Grid Fitness (Scottsdale, AZ’s first green gym) has allowed him to pursue this interest. Nichols is also certified in TRX and is in the final stages of achieving his ACSM Personal Training Certificate.
Coach Nichols lives in San Diego and finds passions in fitness, hiking and seafood.
